The growing interest in the appearance and color of teeth has led to the emergence of a wide range of teeth whitening methods, both in dental offices and in patients’ homes. Concerns about the possible side effects or toxic effects of peroxide-based whitening gels leads to the identification of alternative whitening methods, based on natural compounds with mild action on tooth enamel and remineralizing effect. In this context, this study describes the preparation and in vitro analysis of whitening gels based on natural active agents—bromelain, quince and whey—using organic (polyacrylate, polyethylene glycol) and/or inorganic (silicate) excipients. Five natural products gels were prepared, containing bromelain extract, quince extract and whey, in various proportions. Two supplementary gels, one containing Lubrizol and another containing SiO2, were prepared. All gels were submitted for multiple in vitro analysis such as: SDS-PAGE analysis, UV-vis and FTIR spectroscopy, SEM microscopy, antibacterial activity on Streptococcus mutans ATCC 25175, Porphyromonas gingivalis ATCC 33277, Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923. The quince extract sample was the only one which completely discolored the blue dye on SDS-PAGE analysis. On the UV-vis spectra, the 303 nm band is assigned to an in situ modified form of bromelain. SEM images of gels containing SiO2 particles show evident marks of these particles, while the rest of the gels containing Lubrizol or whey are more uniform. Regarding antibacterial tests, the SiO2 gel samples did not show inhibition in any strains, but the other tested samples varied in the size of the inhibition diameter depending on the amicrobial strain tested; the protease activity of bromelain modulates the composition of the added whey proteins. Bromelain added as a nanoencapsulated assembly better preserves its integrity. The prepared gels showed antibacterial properties.

Tooth color can change because of several factors that are needed for teeth whitening. Teeth whitening can be performed on vital and non-vital teeth. Home bleaching is a vital whitening treatment that many people choose because practice can be done at home. Bleaching agent used for home bleaching techniques is 10% -22% carbamide peroxide. However, carbamide peroxide has side effects on the oral cavity. So, several previous researches have examined natural ingredients that contain the ability to whiten teeth. One of them is 100% watermelon extract which is proven to whitenteeth by immersing. However, this method cannot be applied clinically, so the purpose of this research is to know the effect of watermelon extract on tooth discoloration with rub techniques application. This type of research is an experimental laboratory. 10 maxillary premolars were discolored which were divided into two groups (watermelon extract and 10% carbamide peroxide). Each group was given the treatment 3 hours per-day for 14 days. After the bleaching process, the teeth are cleaned and immersed in a solution of saliva. Before and after bleaching, they were measured with a shade guide and spectrophotometer. Data analysis used paired t-test and wilcoxon. The results of paired t-test on group 1 p=0.024 (p <0.05). The wilcoxon test results on group 2 with p=0.043 (p <0.05). Both have influence, but the application of 10% watermelon extract is lower than 10% carbamide peroxide. It can be concluded: 100% watermelon extract with rubbing techniques has an effect on teeth whitening. Although, lower than 10% carbamide peroxide

Background: Aesthetics has a value that is not absolute and very subjective. Discoloration teeth that can interfere with aesthetics require treatment, the instance is whitening toothpaste. The amount of chemical content contained in toothpaste is considered to have an effect on health. 99% malic acid in red watermelon has been shown to whiten teeth. This research aimed to determine the difference between the use of red watermelon extract (Citrullus lanatus) toothpaste and commercial toothpaste on color changes in vitro.Methods: This research is a true experimental laboratory used 12 samples of post-extraction incisors and canines. All samples were discolored with black tea. The treatment group was divided into 3 groups, there are the group that was brushed with extract red watermelon, the group that was brushed with commercial toothpaste, and the group that was brushed with aquadest. Each group was brushed for 56 min. Measurement of color changes used shade guide and spectrophotometer was carried out before and after brushed. The results of the color changes were analyzed used One Way Annova Test and Paired T-Test.Results: The result of this research used Paired T-Test obtained that the three groups has significance value of p > 0.05 and the result used One Way Annova Test has a significance value of 0.307 (p > 0.05).Conclusion: This study showed that there was no significant difference in tooth color between using extract red watermelon, commercial toothpaste, and aquadest.
