The Effects of Biofeedback on Performance and Technique of the Boxing Jab

Abstract: A growing body of research has addressed the application of movement-based biofeedback techniques for improving sports performers’ gross motor skills. Unlike in previous research, we aimed in this study to quantify the effects of this “external” biofeedback on selected performance and technique variables for the boxing jab among both novices and experts. The technical setup included two inertial measurement units linked wirelessly to a video game system with audio output. The units were configured to provide a… Show more

“…That is, the runners’ running technique improved significantly. In the work [ 11 ], a study was carried out of the influence of biofeedback on the performance and technique of boxing jab. Sixteen participants (8 novices and 8 experts) performed boxing jabs against the bag in blocked phases of biofeedback.…”

“…When compared to baseline, the acute effects of externally focused biofeedback on peak bag acceleration were possibly positive in both retention phases for novices (d = 0.29; d = 0.41) and likely positive for experts (d = 0.41; d = 0.30), respectively. In [ 11 ], the feedback was carried out using an audio signal, the volume of which correlated with the peak value of the acceleration of the boxing bag. That is, in this work there was no comparison with the model of the punch technique.…”

“…The stage of specialized basic training plays an important role in the long-term training of taekwondo players. At this stage, comprehensive prerequisites for specialized training are created, which ensures a sufficient level of sportsmanship in competitive matches [5,11,[16][17][18].…”

“…The jab can be executed using different techniques, such as the long-range (i.e., with step) and the medium-range (i.e., without step) jab (Wigle et al, 2014), aimed at different target areas: long-range jab targeting head, long-range jab targeting body, medium-range jab targeting head and medium-range jab targeting body. However, it is not clear which jab technique recruits which muscle in terms of peak muscle activation (Chen et al, 2021;Stanley, 2020;Walilko et al, 2005).…”
