The Effects of Circadian Rhythm Disruption towards Metabolic Stress and Mental Health: A Review

Abstract: This review aims to present an overview of current research findings on the possible effects of circadian rhythm (CR) disruption towards metabolic stress and mental health. CR can be described as an internal biological clock that regulates our body functions, based on our sleep/wake cycle. Any time that our normal 24-hour circadian rhythm is altered or interrupted, it will have physiological and psychological impacts. However, in today's demanding working world, most of us are working defying the normal cond… Show more

“…Therefore, particular attention must be given to children's sleep patterns also (Sato and Ida, 2017). Chrono-disruption is the misalignment of peripheral clocks with the central clock (Garaulet et al, 2010), which leads to some serious diseases (Ahmad, 2020). Majority of diseases are lifestyle disorders such as cardiovascular diseases, depression, obesity and metabolism (Garaulet et al, 2014) (Fig.…”

“…Shifting school timings to later hours is a practical approach because misalignment of the sleep schedule with the school timing, if carried over for a prolonged period, will result in regularly persistent and irrefutable sleep-debt. Adolescents already undergo tremendous developmental changes on the level of their brain and body, and in addition to it, if they will not get proper sleep to rejuvenate, then this chronic sleep debt may hamper their emotional, mental, physiological and metabolic well-being on a serious note (Hansen et al, 2005;Giedd, 2009;Giedd et al, 2012;Sawyer et al, 2012;Sørensen et al, 2012;Foster et al, 2013;Ahmad, 2020). Alignment of the biological and school clock will help adolescents in improving their health, along with the better academic performance that too in a relatively less stressed atmosphere (Ward, 2021).…”

“…These toxins promote the hormonal release, the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), hypoxia, as well as cell swelling (Wellen et al, 2010). Also, metabolic stress is allied with other diseases like obesity ; aging ; circadian rhythm (Ahmad., 2020); autophagy (Kalra et al, 2022); cardiomyopathy (Liu et al, 2017); inflammatory bowel disease (Schoultz et al, 2011); diabetes ; cognitive impairment , etc. Numerous studies in AD suggest a connection between Aβ oligomers and disease progression.…”
