The effects of L-NAME on DU145 human prostate cancer cell line: A cytotoxicity-based study

Abstract: Of all cancer types, prostate cancer is the second most common one with an age-standardized incidence rate of 29.3 per 100,000 men worldwide. Nitric oxide (NO) is both a radical and versatile messenger molecule involved in many physiological activities. NO was documented to be highly secreted and utilized by cancer cells. N ω-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) is utilized for inhibiting NO synthase. Its worst long-term side effect is reported to be hypertension, hence less cytotoxic than chemotherapeutic a… Show more

“…Serum total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and total oxidant status (TOS) levels of the rats were examined with commercial kits (Rel‐Assay, Sehitkamil, Gaziantep, Turkey). The oxidative stress index (OSI) were calculated from TAC and TOS results with the formula [ 15 ] : OSI=100×TOS0.25emnormalinormaln.25emnormalunormalnnormalinormalt.25emnormalonormalfμmolnormalH2normalO2equiv/LTACnormalinormaln.25emnormalunormalnnormalinormalt.25emnormalonormalfμnormalmolTroloxequiv/L.…”

“…This assay is commonly used to assess cellular metabolic activity as an indicator of cell viability as well as proliferation through mitochondrial activity [ 37 ]. In this study, the MTT assay was performed after Raji cells were incubated with meloxicam for 24 hours [ 27 , 28 ]. The result showed a significant reduction in Raji cell viability after being treated with meloxicam for 24 hours.…”
