The essential oil of Eucalyptus tereticornis, and its constituents α- and β-pinene, potentiate acetylcholine-induced contractions in isolated rat trachea

Abstract: The effects of the essential oil of Eucalyptus tereticornis (EOET), especially the effects of its constituents alpha- and beta-pinene, were studied on rat trachea in vitro. In tracheal rings, EOET, alpha- or beta-pinene potentiated the contractions induced by acetylcholine (ACh). Contractions induced by K(+) (60mM) were also potentiated by alpha- and beta-pinene, but were reduced by EOET. Our findings show that EOET has myorelaxant effects on rat airways, but potentiates ACh-induced contractions. Monoterpenes … Show more

“…The comparison of the NVOC construction in C. japonica forest showed 51% of αpinene (1.79 μg/m 3 ), followed by 19% of β-pinene (0.68 μg/m 3 ), 8% of sabinene (0.29 μg/m 3 ). Higher ratio of α-pinene is known for effective reduction and resistance on stress, microbial, oxidant, cancer, depressant, insecticidal (Juven et al, 1994;Gustafson et al, 1998;Cox et al, 2000;Lambert et al, 2001;EH et al, 2003;McKay et al, 2003;Kawakami et al, 2004;Yamaoka et al, 2005;Mercier et al, 2009;Lima et al, 2010;Menezes et al, 2010;Matsuo et al, 2011;Lee et al,2012;Mishra et al, 2012;Wang et al, 2012). β-pinene was known for effective reduction in the hypotension, tachycardia (Gavrilov et al, 2010;Menezes et al, 2010).…”

“…Nevertheless, further investigation is needed to clarify this mechanism of action. [25] In previous studies, some other monoterpene constituents of SP1 demonstrated important cardiovascular effects that are partially related to vasorelaxant activity. The dry roots of S. sibiricum yield an essential oil containing a-pinene and b-pinene, myrcene, limonene, p-cymene, b-phellandrene (major constituent), fenchone, fenchyl alcohol and acetate, fenchyl hydroxycinnamate, osthol, p-hydroxy cinnamate, sesibricin, imperatorin and bergapten.…”

“…Another investigation indicated that the relaxing effects on smooth muscles observed for the mixture of aand b-pinene may involve an increased AChinduced Ca 2+ influx into cytoplasm through receptoroperated Ca 2+ channels. [25] In previous studies, some other monoterpene constituents of SP1 demonstrated important cardiovascular effects that are partially related to vasorelaxant activity. Limonene, after oral administration was able to significantly decrease the effect of monocrotaline on pulmonary hypertension in rats.…”

“…It is used in many countries to treat a variety of medical conditions [ 2 , 6 ]. A hot-water extract of the dried leaves of E. globulus is used traditionally as a remedy to treat symptoms of respiratory infections, such as cold, flu, and sinus congestion [ 7 , 8 , 9 ]. “Eucalyptus leaf extract” has been approved as a natural food additive and it is included among the antioxidants in the “List of Existing Food Additives in Japan” [ 9 ].…”
