The Experiences of Accession 8 Migrants in England: Motivations, Work and Agency

Abstract: Drawing on a recently completed qualitative study in a northern, English city this paper explores motivations and experiences of Accession 8 migrants who have entered the UK following the expansion of the European Union in 2004. The paper considers commonalities and differences among the group of migrants routinely referred to as A8 migrant workers/labourers. Diversity is apparent in respect of three particular aspects. “…A body of primarily qualitative research is emerging that documents the complex, specifically non-economic motivations of the new EU migrants (Ryan et al, 2009, Krings et al, 2013a, Cook et al, 2011, Burrell, 2010, as well as the complexity of their migration patterns. “…An intersectional approach to the experiences as well as socio-political processes pushes scholars to take into account, for example, the 'whitening' and 're-racialisation' of the immigrant working class through state migration policies (Miles, 1982) such as with the arrival of white immigrants from the A8 countries (McDowell, 2008) and their partial inclusion in the low-end sectors of the economy such as hospitality and agriculture (Cook et al, 2011;Fox et al, 2012). In addition, recent contentious political events such as Brexit in the UK have shown how highly skilled migrant workers, an often overlooked social group in IR research on migration, will also suffer new forms of exclusion due to the changing rules on free movement and residency rights, with obvious repercussions on their employment situation.…”

“…poor language skills), work below their actual qualifications have been reported to feel disadvantaged, devalued and deskilled in the UK (Currie, 2008). These sentiments -alongside the precarious positionality of some economic migrants -have been claimed to contribute to the development of less tolerant or racist attitudes towards difference (Cook et al, 2011a;McDowell, 2009;McDowell et al, 2007). While the arguably insecure or underprivileged position of some labour migrants might fuel negative perceptions of difference, it is crucial not to overlook the influence of other circumstances on the development of unfavourable attitudes towards the ethnic, national or religious Other.…”
