The global burden of decubitus ulcers from 1990 to 2019

Abstract: There are no studies assessing the epidemiology and burden of decubitus ulcers at global, regional, and national levels. We aim to report this issue from 1990 to 2019 by extracting data from the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) 2019 and stratifying it by age, gender, and socio-demographic index (SDI). Globally, the number of prevalent cases of decubitus ulcers in 2019 is 0.85 (95% UI 0.78 to 0.94) million. The age-standardized rates of prevalence, incidence, and years lived with disability (YLDs) in 2019 a… Show more

“…This study did not show a significant difference regarding age compared to the reported association between older age and PI in other studies [9,27,29]. Also, the study did not show a significant difference regarding gender that coincides with reports of the global burden of PI [2]. But it contradicts the reported higher prevalence of PI among males in other studies [9,31].…”

“…As a result of the increasing longevity, besides functional and cognitive impairments, pressure injury (PI) became a concern among older adults [1]. PI represented 3.17 million incident cases and 0.85 million prevalent cases in 2019, with a prominent burden, especially among persons aged ≥95 years old [2]. PI, also known as a pressure ulcer or bedsore, represents an area of skin and soft tissue damage due to pressure and shear forces at bony prominences such as sacrum, elbows, and heels [3,4].…”

“…Pressure ulcers (PUs), formerly known as pressure injury (PI), refer to localized damage to the skin or subcutaneous tissue caused by pressure combined with shearing force, usually occurring at the bony prominence [1][2][3]. PU is the most prevalent health problem worldwide and has been designated by several countries as one of the most important sentinel events in healthcare [4,5]. -e place where PU occurs is uncertain, and it can occur outside the hospital, after admission, or even during transport.…”

“…Destaca-se que os pacientes idosos são mais propensos a LPP; dois terços destas lesões ocorrem em pacientes com mais de 70 anos. Há dados que mostram que 83% dos pacientes internados com LPPs as desenvolveram em até cinco dias de internação (Zhang et al, 2021).…”
