The Global Sea Level Observing System (GLOSS)

Abstract: OVERVIEWSea level is one of the most useful oceanographic parameters. Sea level data are vital to scientists for studies of fluctuations in major ocean currents and global climate change, to engineers for the design of coastal installations, to a large community engaged in what is now called "operational oceanography" (e.g. the provision of flood warnings from storm surges and tsunamis), and in local applications such as provision of tide tables and real-time data for port operations. For nearly 25 years, the … Show more

In line with this interest, the Marseille tide gauge has been committed to the core network of stations of the Global Sea Level Observing System (GLOSS) since its inception in 1985 (Merrifield et al 2010). It has also been contributing data to the Permanent Service for Mean Sea Level (PSMSL; Holgate et al 2013).…”

“…'Abstract space [is] the space of post-war capitalism' [37]. Representational spaces serve as abstract space as conceived through the relation of ideology, power and knowledge [38]. Lefebvre inserts that the predicament of space and that of the lived experience is that it gets "crushed" and "vanquished" by abstract space [39].…”

“…GLOSS (Global Sea Level Observing System) has sought to provide water level data that meets the requirements of both the tsunami and the storm surge community [21], with more data now available in nearreal time, e.g. 166 of the GLOSS Global Core Network stations as opposed to 72 a decade earlier.…”
