The Growth of Local Tree Species on Post-Coal Mining Areas in East Kalimantan

Abstract: Post-coal mining areas need rehabilitation to restore its functionality. Not all plants could grow well on bare ex-coal mining area because of the excessive light intensity and extreme temperature fluctuations. This study is aimed to determine suitable local tree species for rehabilitating mined areas. Planting was carried out in November 2012, and observations were made in November 2015. The study site was in the district of Samboja, Kutai Kartanegara, East Kalimantan Province, Indonesia. Research results re… Show more

“…Fast-growing species were chosen as one of the requirements for the restoration plant species to form the forest structure quickly. Growth in height and stem diameter at the age of four years of V. pinnata reached 5 m and 7.22 cm, respectively [28]. In addition, proboscis monkeys also have a high preference for using their young leaves as a source of food.…”

“…These species need to be selected to be used for habitat restoration. The selection of adaptive species to various soil and environmental conditions will increase the success of rehabilitating the habitat [28]. In addition, the selected plants are proboscis monkey's feed sources, grow fast, and have known propagation and planting techniques.…”

“…Re-planting was performed to replace the mortal seedlings within one to two months after planting [175]. Weeding was conducted once every four months up to 1 year after planting and then once every six months in the second and the third year after planting [143,184]. Weeding was conducted to release the plants from the growing competition with the weeds.…”

“…One of the factors in assessing the success of reclamation and revegetation is the planting of local plants. Several studies have been carried out and have recommended several local tree species that can adapt to coal mine reclamation land [2] [3]. Based on this information, PT Bara Tabang, in collaboration with BPSILHK Samboja, conducted a post-mining land revegetation trial using several local tree species by establishing a demonstration plot.…”
