The gut microbiota profile in psoriasis: a Brazilian case-control study

Abstract: Significance and Impact of the Study: The data from this research will contribute to a better understanding of the role of the microbiota in the pathogenesis of psoriasis, contributing to the identification of biomarkers that will aid in early diagnosis and the choice or development of more personalized and effective treatments.

“…The enrichment of the Lachnospiraceae family was also highlighted by another study performed on high-fat diet-fed mice administrated with 300 mg/kg/day resveratrol for 16 weeks [ 136 ]. As previously presented, psoriasis patients tend to have lower levels of Lachnospiraceae family and Blautia compared with healthy individuals [ 40 , 137 ]; thus, resveratrol supplementation could lead to improvements in gut microbial diversity among these patients.…”

“…Moreover, complement 3 has a negative correlation with Escherichia level [ 38 ], which tends to be higher in psoriasis patients [ 39 ]. According to a study in Brazil that investigated the composition and diversity of the gut microbiota in 21 subjects with psoriasis, when compared to the control group, the psoriasis group showed a decrease in the Lachnospira and Akkermansia muciniphila species [ 40 ]. This decrease in Akkermansia muciniphila was also highlighted by another study that used 16S rDNA sequencing technology to examine microbiota composition in 14 psoriasis patients [ 41 ].…”

“…The reduction of Actinobacteria showed a negative correlation with PASI in 1 study [38]. Two other studies showed a deterioration in the number of Proteobacteria phylum [32,33] while two studies showed a decrease in Tenericutes phylum and Verrucomicrobia phylum in psoriatic patients [30,36].…”

“…At the phylum level, 6/14 studies showed an increase [26,29,32,33,31,34], while 3/14 reported a decrease [25,35,36] in Firmicutes phylum in psoriatic patients compared to the healthy control group. The number of bacteria belonging to the Bacteroidetes phylum was increased in psoriatic patients only in two studies, while 5/11 studies indicated a decrease [37,26,32,33,31].…”

“…Response to fecal microbiota transplantation in treating irritable bowel syndrome also correlated with an increased relative abundance of Akkermansia. Reduction in the Ruminococcus , Lachnospira , and Blautia genera , as well as in the Akkermansia muciniphila species, is also reported in psoriasis [ 19 , 20 , 21 ], psoriatic arthritis, and spondyloarthritis [ 22 ], and negatively correlated with the serum levels of C3 in SLE patients [ 23 ].…”
