The Impact of Carbon Emissions Trading Pilot Policy on Industrial Structure Upgrading

Abstract: Using the carbon emissions trading pilot policy implemented since 2011 as a quasi-natural experiment, this paper constructs a multi-period DID model based on panel data of 280 prefecture-level cities from 2006–2019 to explore the impact of the carbon emissions trading pilot policy on industrial structure upgrading and conducts a heterogeneity test and mechanism test. This study finds that the carbon emissions trading pilot policy significantly promotes the upgrading of industrial structures, especially for lar… Show more

“…The mechanism would be that ETS would increase the firm’s burden of carbon emission and may induce firms to innovate their business model from heavy emitting to less emitting, for example, from manufacturing to service industries. Such efforts would in the end change the industrial structure or industrial chain in larger scale 76 78 and affect the carbon emission amount.…”

“…The mechanism connecting the ETS and carbon emission reduction can also be discussed following prior studies. Previous literature has pointed out various mechanisms that drive the carbon emission reduction such as innovation, industrial structure, or industrial chain [76][77][78] . Our findings also support the previous studies.…”

“…In order to examine the innovative incentive effects of digital media news dissemination as influenced by public opinion pressures, this paper separately looks at the number of Guba posts and financial news of WeChat public accounts to portray the pressure of online public opinion concerns faced by companies. Firms with few Guba posts and few financial news are classified as low online opinion pressure groups according to the median per year, and firms with high Guba posts and high financial news are classified as high online opinion pressure groups, and group regression is conducted separately [22]. Table 5 reports the results of the grouped regressions based on online opinion pressure.…”

“…For the whole country, there are threshold values for the industrial structure upgrading index and the industrial low-carbon index. Combined with the specific regression coefficient, the overall promotion effect of the industrial structure is the best when the ecological governance intensity is between 1.0017 and 1.4119, while the current average governance intensity is 0.8043, so the overall governance needs to be strengthened [31].…”
