The impact of selenium nanoparticles on sperm quality

Abstract: The health of people, animals, and microbes depends on selenium, a trace micronutrient. Recently, several researchers have become interested in selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) because of their biocompatibility, bioavailability, and low toxicity. Selenium nanoparticles are therefore widely used in a variety of biomedical applications due to their greater bioactivity. The antioxidant defence capacity of semen is reduced during processing and cryopreservation; nevertheless, the antioxidant inclusion in the freezin… Show more

“…Although semen contains a variety of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants, their natural protection may not be enough to minimize the harmful effects of ROS. In such a situation, the antioxidant capabilities of semen can be increased by utilizing extenders enriched with exogenous antioxidants that either regulate, suppress, or block the oxidation process or prevent the generation of ROS in order to maintain sperm quality ( 17 ). Several NPs can be used in reproductive biological methods, particularly during semen preservation because of their antioxidant properties ( 18 ).…”

“…The enzyme GSH-PX uses selenium as one of its constituents and protects against peroxidative injury to cell membranes and other organelles that constitute lipids ( 17 ). Over the past two decades, a growing corpus of research has examined the effects of NPs on semen characteristics.…”

“…Lambs, as a consequence, produce more growth and have a stronger immune system than dams and lambs from poor Se regions [20] . A role for Se in semen is to increase its ability to fertilize and enhance conception by reducing spermatic membrane lipid peroxidation and oxidative damage and decreasing sperm acrosome membrane damage [33] . However, the reproductive system is influenced by dietary Se insufficiency and surplus, which lead to decreased sperm parameters [34] or possibly lead to an approach that impacts fertility and infertility [35] .…”
