The Impact of Urban Development Intensity on Ecological Carrying Capacity: A Case Study of Ecologically Fragile Areas

Abstract: In ecologically fragile areas, an uncontrolled increase in urban development intensity (UDI) will erode the ecological carrying capacity (ECC). This study aimed to explore the relationship between UDI and ECC and quantify the impacts of UDI on ECC. The Three Gorges Reservoir Area (Chongqing section) was chosen for the case study. Firstly, the UDI and ECC were comprehensively evaluated. Then, the coupling coordination relationship between the two was analyzed by a coupling coordination degree model. Finally, th… Show more

“…With the definition of "urbanization" in urban geography as the support, the level of urbanization is comprehensively evaluated in four aspects [12][13][14][15][16][17], including population, economy, space, and society; the ecological pressure is evaluated in three aspects, including ecological pressure (Y1), ecological state (Y2), and ecological response (Y3). e overall evaluation indicator system is presented in Table 1.…”

“…However, the authors of most studies focus only on the impact of urbanization on one environmental element, and few provide comprehensive conclusions based on the perspective of overall environmental quality. In particular, few studies quantitatively explain the mechanism of urbanization's effects on environmental quality, especially in ecologically fragile areas [14].…”

“…China is one of the countries with the largest distribution of ecologically fragile areas, the largest number of types, and the most obvious signs of vulnerability. According to the annual report (2012) of the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development (CCICED), more than 360 million people live in ecologically fragile areas, accounting for about a quarter of the total population of China [2]. In addition, ecologically fragile areas cover more than 60% of the less develop areas in China, which generally exhibit weak resource and environmental carrying capacity with local overloading.…”
