The (in)adequacy of translational research in dentistry

Abstract: Translational research, as the name suggests, “translates” research findings into clinical practice to improve the health of human beings. The translational process builds on information from experiments conducted at a basic level (i.e., in vitro and/or animal studies) and progresses over experimental human studies for efficacy, efficiency, and safety to implementation. Therefore, all steps in the process should be based on studies conducted with the highest methodological quality possible in order to provide … Show more

“…According to translational research in dentistry, analytical epidemiological studies, of the type of the present case–control study, should have the ultimate goal of producing more meaningful and applicable results that serve to improve people's health (Faggion, 2020). Therefore, dentists should translate the results of this study, along with those of others previously published (Nijakowski et al, 2021; Piras et al, 2017; Poyato‐Borrego et al, 2020, 2021), into the dental clinic.…”

“…Given how harms are considered in medical 49,50 and dental research, 51,52 as well as in the introduction of new disease definitions in medicine, 3,10 this neglect of possible harms was not a surprise. Related to the periodontitis classification, a few potential harms of the new classification system could nonetheless have been considered.…”

“…According to the "translational research concept", the ultimate goal of research should be conducting studies with the highest methodological quality possible to obtain accurate and useful information for researchers, clinicians and patients [62]. Within this context, clinicians and researchers should consider the current results with particular attention to promote high-quality research on this emerging topic.…”
