The increase in incidence of cancer of the tongue in the Nordic countries continues into the twenty-first century

These findings suggest the possible emergence of new etiological or genetic factors driving carcinogenesis in the tongue, which features more strongly in certain geographic areas, and in different sexes, accounting for heterogeneous results observed herein .…”

“…Is there a real increase in incidence or is this merely an unmasking of a patient cohort consequent to successful anti‐tobacco programs and a decrease in the number of tobacco‐related malignancies? Studies from several tertiary centers and population databases have contradictory results . There are a number of reasons why this may be so.…”

“…In other cases, the reduction has been linked with changes of treatments, notably hormone replacement therapy [44,45] or the use of screening or testing like Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) for prostate cancer in Italy [46]. On the other hand, increase of cancer of the tongue has been recorded in Nordic countries [47], thyroid cancer in the U.S. [48] and Australia [49], distant stage breast cancer in the US [50] and India [51]. Variations in screening and lifestyle factors are considered to provide substantial incidence variation [52] but others suggest variations of other risk factors [53].…”

“…Other observed or suspected risk factors include diets low in fruit and vegetables, poor dental care, professional exposure to carcinogens or viral infection with Epstein–Barr virus or human immunodeficiency virus . But in recent decades, a lot of countries have observed changes in the epidemiological pattern of a subset of these cancers: the United States, Canada and Scandinavian countries have seen an increase in the incidence of oropharyngeal cancers, whereas the incidence of other HNC is decreasing or constant. For example, from Canadian Cancer Registry data, Forte et al .…”
