“…The morphological characterization of the VLKOV1 population matches previous descriptions and depictions of Saprodinium dentatum (Dragesco, 1960; Fernandes et al, 2018; Foissner et al, 1992; Jankowski, 1964b; Kahl, 1932b; Kreutz & Foissner, 2006; Lauterborn, 1901, 1908; Schrenk & Bardele, 1991; Sola et al, 1992; Wetzel, 1928). Although the newly determined 18S rRNA gene sequence differs in 29 nucleotide positions (i.e.…”

“…Lauterborn (1901) first described this species as Discomorpha dentata (genus replacement name Discomorphella Corliss, 1960) and later erected the genus Saprodinium (Lauterborn, 1908) with S. dentatum as its type and only species. Since its description, this large and easily recognized species has been well‐characterized from a morphologic and molecular standpoint (Dragesco, 1960; Fernandes et al, 2018; Foissner et al, 1992; Jankowski, 1964b; Schrenk & Bardele, 1991; Sola et al, 1992; Wetzel, 1928). At least six additional species have been erected within, or transferred to Saprodinium (i.e.…”
