The lifetimes of evaporating sessile droplets are significantly extended by strong thermal effects

Abstract: The evaporation of sessile droplets is analysed when the influence of the thermal properties of the system is strong. We obtain asymptotic solutions for the evolution, and hence explicit expressions for the lifetimes, of droplets when the substrate has a high thermal resistance relative to the droplet and when the saturation concentration of the vapour depends strongly on temperature. In both situations we find that the lifetimes of the droplets are significantly extended relative to those when thermal effects… Show more

“…we need to specify the mode in which the droplet is evaporating. The works by Stauber et al [7,8] and Schofield et al [9] describe various modes of evaporation for axisymmetric droplets. In the present work, we consider the two-dimensional analogues of three of these modes: the constant-radius (CR) mode, the constant-angle (CA) mode, and the stick-slide (SS) mode.…”

“…The evaporation of sessile droplets has been studied extensively in recent years [1]. Topics of particular interest include particle transport during drying [2][3][4] and the resulting instabilities [5], nano-scale phenomena [6], and droplet lifetimes [7][8][9].…”

“…The evolution, and in particular, the lifetimes, of droplets evaporating in a variety of different modes of evaporation have been studied by Stauber et el. [20,21] and Schofield et al [22] using the diffusion-limited evaporation model (see, for example, Popov [18] and Saada et al [23]).…”
