The link between atopic dermatitis and asthma- immunological imbalance and beyond

Abstract: Atopic diseases are multifactorial chronic disturbances which may evolve one into another and have overlapping pathogenetic mechanisms. Atopic dermatitis is in most cases the first step towards the development of the atopic march and represents a major socio-economic burden in the industrialized countries. The treatment of atopic diseases is often long-lasting and in some cases with lower effectiveness than expected. In order to prevent the development of the atopic march, the links between the atopic diseases … Show more

“…A total of 55% of our patients with severe AD had asthma, compared to 33% with mild disease. Studies have proposed Th2‐shifted systemic inflammation as a factor for development of multiple atopic comorbidities in severe AD 33,34 . There have been reports that link the pronounced immunologic Th2‐shift of asthma directly with epidermal skin barrier effects, causing susceptibility to more severe AD, skin infections and microbiome changes 35 .…”

“…The findings of our study indicate that house dust allergy, hay fever, and atopic dermatitis increase the risk of asthma. Atopic dermatitis is often one of the first stages of the allergic march that can lead to the development of asthma [ 34 ]. Moreover, atopic dermatitis is associated with food allergy and allergic rhinitis.…”
