The long‐term results of Anderson–Hynes pyeloplasty

Abstract: showed an improvement over the preoperative split renal function in 19 patients (79%) and an improvement in drainage in 23 (96%). Conclusions The Anderson±Hynes pyeloplasty is an excellent procedure for treating pelvi-ureteric junction obstruction, and produces a lasting improvement in function and drainage in most patients. It is the`gold standard' against which newer techniques should be compared.

“…Open pyeloplasty has been the standard for managing PUJO with a success rate of > 90% in most hands [11,12]. Since the beginning of minimally invasive era, different approaches have been used to treat the disease, in an effort to reduce the morbidity associated with the open procedure.…”

“…The open Anderson-Hynes procedure continues to be the gold standard, with an overall success rate of 90%. 1 To decrease the morbidity and hospital care costs associated with the large flank incision needed for the open procedure, a flurry of activity has been directed to developing minimally invasive surgical techniques to reduce morbidity while preserving excellent success rates. Endopyelotomy successfully reduced morbidity, but long-term follow-up revealed a lower success rate in comparison with the open procedure.…”

“…4 Although several procedures have been described, open pyeloplasty is still one of the practiced approaches and one of the alternatives for treatment. [1][2][3] A quest for less invasive methods drove Schuessler et al 24 to describe the first laparoscopic pyeloplasty in 1993. Nowadays, laparoscopic pyeloplasty has been shown to be safe and effective, 5,9,25 with consistent and favorable results, challenging the open procedures as the gold standard in the treatment of UPJO.…”

“…The traditional gold standard for the management of ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO) used to be open pyeloplasty, [1][2][3] but in the minimally invasive era, novel approaches have become apparent alternatives to UPJO management. 4 In addition, in recent years, laparoscopic pyeloplasty has been moving rapidly toward replacing open surgery as the gold standard in the treatment of UPJO.…”
