The Need to Help Journalists with Data and Information Visualization

Abstract: As news migrates to mobile phones, media companies are turning to data visualization to wet readers' appetites for stories they can read at length on their home or work computers. Journalists are trained to write stories, not in statistics or coding, however. The big news organizations have the funds to hire computer graphics experts, but local news organizations need help.

“…The results demonstrate that the use of visual communication while presenting the story to the intended audience was the highest-ranked skill (mean = 4.04) followed by the ability to “organize the content in a manner that supports the purpose and format of the story” (mean = 3.86). This outcome of their skill set is evident as electronic media reporters mainly focus on the visual communication tools or visualization (Reilly, 2017) of the content instead of other formats of story.…”

“…Another practical significance of this study is that it supported the call for greater crosstraining of communicators in digital and interactive strategies as well as more accessible software programs for data visualization (Reilly, 2017;Weber & Rall, 2012). Reilly (2017) particularly focused on the need for smaller, local news outlets to remain relevant through increased use of data visualization and digitalization of content. This study supports the notion that interactive strategies could help communicators in both rural and urban areas.…”

“…Interactive infographics have the unique power of engaging the reader in data by pointing out relationships and patterns that would be difficult to explain through text alone (Weber & Rall, 2012). As Reilly (2017) stated, "In a news environment where high story turnover is necessary, the strength of data visualization lies in the viewer's ability to process visual information more rapidly than verbal information" (p. 8).…”

“…A autora traz ainda que os responsáveis por produzir estes conteúdos comumente não tem formação em estatística ou programação, o que dificulta a produção destes conteúdos. Assim como Reilly (2017), acreditamos que o caminho para o melhor desenvolvimento de visualizações de informações passe pela colaboração entre profissionais de áreas distintas. Contudo, defendemos também que o conhecimento estatístico elementar gráfico componha o referencial daqueles que trabalham com a composição visual propriamente dita.…”
