The Novel Coronavirus – Latest Findings

Abstract: Summary What was initially a lung infection epidemic in the metropolitan area of Wuhan followed by a now contained extension to mainland China has now spread to all continents as a major pandemic with current hotspots in Europe and the USA. This minireview is an update of an earlier report on this novel coronavirus infection (Brüssow, 2020, Microb Biotech 13, 607). I am now summarizing the research literature published between end of February to mid‐April 2020.

“…This result is consistent with the research of Yang Yao in Shaanxi province outside Wuhan (12). In that study, the majority were mild cases (86.84%), and only 9.6% required a ventilator, far fewer than those reported in prior studies from the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic (11), indicating that this disease has potentially become more mild as the chains of transmission have grown. However, the majority of COVID-19 cases, including those which are mild, can still quickly become severe or critical without medical support (13).…”

“…The cases described herein were from the widespread national outbreak stage (9). In the current stage, no male dominance among the patients was evident, with fewer patients having been exposed to the Seafood Market (11). Furthermore, the mean age of COVID-19 patients presenting in the present study was 46.5 years.…”

“…The COVID‐19 pandemic has brought back into focus the global vulnerability of our society to infectious diseases (Brüssow, 2020). Among them, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is currently one of the major global health concerns, with current predictions indicating that it will cause 10 million deaths annually by 2050 and a global cost of 100 trillion USD (Trotter et al ., 2019).…”

“…In China, the last part of 2019 has been characterized by the detection of a novel severe acute respiratory syndrome of unknown origin that did not respond to common treatments of respiratory illnesses. The causative agent of this rapidly-diffusing disease has been identified in an unknown coronavirus that has been denoted as SARS-CoV-2 (Brussow 2020 and references therein, Chen et al 2020). The unravelling of the virus genome has highlighted that SARS-CoV-2 shares remarkable similarities with the coronaviruses responsible for SARS and MERS syndromes, but also some clear distinctive features.…”
