The Oxidant Effect of Bisphenol A (BPA) Can be Decoupled from its Endocrine Disruptor Property

Abstract: Bisphenol A (BPA) is an environmental defilement released mainly from polycarbonate plastic and epoxy resins. The main toxicological impact of BPA is its endocrine disruptor activities. Its structural features confer the ability to bind to both estrogen receptor (ER) subtypes. Furthermore, we recently reported that BPA aggravates male reproductive hormones. In addition to its endocrine disruptor properties, we have also reported that BPA possesses oxidant activity which is able to trigger oxidative stress. Sev… Show more

“…In the present study, MDA and SOD were used as oxidative stress markers. MDA is produced as a byproduct of lipid peroxidation, and SOD acts as a radical scavenger by catalyzing the dismutation of the superoxide anion radical into non-reactive molecules [46,47]. Studies showed that the animal model of psychosocial stress exhibits elevated MDA levels and reduced levels of SOD in the brain tissue [48], causing the depletion of 5-HT levels and triggering anxiety- and depressive-related behaviors, as evidenced by the open field and forced swim tests.…”

“…Among them, bisphenol A (BPA) and bisphenol F (BPF), as important intermediates, are mostly used in the production of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins, ref. [ 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 ] while nonylphenol (NP) and octyl phenol (OP) are widely used in the production of plastic bags, plasticizers, detergents, pesticides, etc [ 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 ]. These EDCs widely exist in the environment, causing potential harm to human health [ 11 , 12 ], and the amount of these disruptors is very small in environmental samples.…”
