The pivotal function of dehydroascorbate reductase in glutathione homeostasis in plants

Abstract: Under natural conditions, plants are exposed to various abiotic and biotic stresses that trigger rapid changes in the production and removal of reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The ascorbate-glutathione pathway has been recognized to be a key player in H2O2 metabolism, in which reduced glutathione (GSH) regenerates ascorbate by reducing dehydroascorbate (DHA), either chemically or via DHA reductase (DHAR), an enzyme belonging to the glutathione S-transferase (GST) superfamily. Th… Show more

“…Since GR transforms GSSG to GSH, regenerated GSH pool was constantly achievable and/or GSH could anew begin reaction of DHAR. GSH could be also oxidized to GSSG by the direct reaction with H 2 O 2 , which in this way was beneficially removed from cells (Abedinzadeh et al 1989 ; Labudda 2018 ; Ding et al 2020 ). Summarizing, observed by us, decreased number of H 2 O 2 in N + WCM plants was presumably due in no small part to the Foyer–Halliwell–Asada pathway.…”

“…Their protein products are localized either in the cytosol (DHAR1, DHAR2) or chloroplasts (DHAR3; Rahantaniaina et al, 2017). Recently, their role in the regulation of ascorbate and glutathione homeostasis was described during plant developmental processes (reviewed in Ding et al, 2020). The overexpression of DHAR1 protects Arabidopsis from methyl viologen-induced oxidative, high temperature, and high light stresses (Ushimaru et al, 2006;Wang et al, 2010;Noshi et al, 2017).…”

“…Overexpression of DHAR has highlighted its important roles in ascorbate regeneration and responses to environmental stresses. DHAR functions in plant defense, growth, and development were reviewed in detail by Dingl et al [78].…”
