The psychological mindedness assessment procedure – validation study of a Dutch version

Abstract: The Dutch translation of the PMAP and the added scenarios of the PMAP-plus are reliable instruments. The predictive power for psychotherapy outcome needs to be investigated in a patient group. The variation in presented clinical problems could also make it a useful instrument to assess psychological mindedness in psychotherapists.

“…Ein standardisiertes Interview, welches die Bewertung von Filmaufnahmen nutzt, ist die Psychological Mindedness Assessment Procedure (PMAP) von McCallum und Piper (1990). Smith et al (2009) erweiterten das ursprüngliche Setting um zwei weitere, emotionshaltige Filmstimuli (MMAP plus).…”

“…The authors speculate that PM may be a more cognitive process and alexithymia a deficit in emotional or experiential processes. Smith, Kleijn, Trijsburg, Segaar, Van der Staak, Hutschemaekers (2009) conducted a study to describe psychometric properties of the Dutch version of PMS. They assessed construct validity by exploring the relationship of the PM to subjective mood states (emotional reactions) measured by Positive and Negative Affect Schedule.…”

“…Another potential limitation in the study's methodology that is important to note is the length and content of the stimulus videotapes. Most therapy analogue studies have used videos that are 10 minutes in length or shorter, and that depict differences in therapy conditions from the beginning to the end of the tape (Houts & Graham, 1986;Smith et al, 2009). Thus, in those studies, participants are required to maintain attention to the stimulus materials for a relatively brief amount of time and are exposed to the different experimental conditions throughout the videos, so even if their attention varies over the course of the video, they may be able to respond to differences that are present in those portions of video that they do attend to.…”

“…Thus, the final sample included 117 participants. This sample size is larger than the samples used in many past analogue therapy studies, most of which included 100 participants or fewer (e.g., Houts & Graham, 1986;Hoyt, 2002;Smith, Kleijn, Trijsburg, Segaar, van der Staak, & Hutschemaekers, 2009), suggesting that a sample size of 117 is sufficient for the purposes of the current study. In addition, a sample size of 120 typically provides ample power to detect a moderate effect size in 2x2…”
