The Relation Between Serum Leptin Levels and Max VO2in Male Patients with Type I Diabetes and Healthy Sedentary Males

Abstract: This study aimed at investigating leptin levels in male diabetes type I patients who were on insulin treatment and also healthy sedentary males. The study included 10 male type I diabetes patients and 17 healthy sedentary males. Leptin levels of type I diabetes patients and healthy sedentary males with body mass index (BMI) over 25 kg/m2 were evaluated separately. The relation between serum leptin, max VO2, blood lactic acid levels before and after exercise, and effort durations of participants were investigat… Show more

“…Studies exploring the relationship between plasma zinc and plasma leptin are controversial [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13]. Hypoleptinemia is a common feature observed in many athletes that is associated with energy deficit provoked by exercise [14] and/or by decreased fat mass [11,12].…”

“…In type 1 diabetes, continuous HIE induces sustained hyperglycemia (9,10), while very brief intermittent HIE may reduce hyperglycemia (11). Acid-base disturbances during exercise may be heightened in type 1 diabetes (12)(13)(14). Effects of HIE training on glycemia and acid-base balance during intermittent HIE in type 1 diabetes are unknown; thus, despite the potential clinical importance of such exercise, there is no evidence on which to base patient guidelines.…”

“…Although leptin studies have revealed that it is a molecule that sends signals to the brain about the fat state and energy reserves of the body, the fact that it has been shown to have receptors in many organs suggests that leptin's functions are not limited with restricting food intake and increasing energy consumption (21). There are still points to be clarifi ed about the effects of leptin hormone on physiological mechanisms.…”

“…There are still points to be clarifi ed about the effects of leptin hormone on physiological mechanisms. The fact that leptin is a topic of interest for many researchers and is studied in various disci- plines indicates that leptin's mechanism of infl uence can be fully brought to light in the near future (21).…”
