The relationship of maxillary canines to the facial anatomical landmarks in a group of Thai people

Abstract: PURPOSEThe objective was to evaluate canine positions, intercanine tip width (ICTW) and width of distal surface of canine (WDC), related to facial landmarks including interalar width (IAW), intercommissural width (ICoW), and distance between left and right projection lines drawn from inner canthus of eyes to alae of the nose (DPICa) in a group of Thai.MATERIALS AND METHODSOne hundred Thai subjects aged 18-35 years were selected. IAW and ICoW were measured on subject's face using digital vernier caliper. Irreve… Show more

“…Discussions on this topic are present in the contemporary professional literature. [20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28] Reviews of the recent scientific literature reveal studies Graph 1: Measurement of IAD in various population groups that were carried out using different methodology and sample size, different face and natural teeth parameters, 8,[10][11][12][13]15,19,20 casts, 5,[16][17][18]21,22 or photographs, 5,14,16,17,20 as well as various types of gauge which make the comparison of results very difficult. The authors here used a variety of instruments to determine the measurements.…”

“…Therefore, correct selection of artificial teeth is essential to achieve a pleasant esthetic outcome. [6][7][8][9][10] The width of the maxillary anteriors is difficult to correlate with the facial measurements than the height of the maxillary anteriors. In addition, the generation approaching 70 years of age recognizes that maintaining their natural dentition improves appearance and smile and serves as a visible sign of successful aging.…”

“…Kini and Angadi 21 suggested ICoW to be related to ICTW in a ratio of 1.35:1 when measured on a photograph. Sinavarat et al 22 also found it to be related to ICTW and intercanine distance from distal surface of canines in a straight line and suggested it to be used only as a tentative method. In this study, the mean ICoW was found to be 51.7 mm ranging from 40 to 99 mm.…”

“…Selection and preparation of artificial teeth depend on various factors. 20 When there is no pre-extraction record, selection of the size and shape of artificial teeth will be difficult. Landmark of facial anatomy and the oral cavity can be used as a guide in terms of the selection of artificial teeth.…”

“…Landmark of facial anatomy and the oral cavity can be used as a guide in terms of the selection of artificial teeth. 17,20 Landmarks of facial anatomy include interalar width, intercommissural width, bizygomatic width, intercanthal width and interpupillary width. There are various different methods listed on some literature in the selection of the size of artificial teeth and there is no method that can last for long time and are used universally.…”
