The Reliability of the Lanthony Desaturated D-15 Test

Abstract: Although the Lanthony Desaturated D-15 test can be used to assess fine color discrimination, there is considerable within-subject variability in test results. The intraclass correlation coefficient is less than that recommended for use in clinical testing or research. Clinicians should consider at least three administrations of the test at each sitting to ensure precision and we recommend taking the mean of those three tests.

In the reliability study of Good et al (2005; 1.12 § 0.12 for the Wrst and 1.10 § 0.12 for the second examination) lower CCI values were shown.…”

“…This underlines the critical remarks on the precision of the measurements which were cited above. In Table 4 an increase of explained CCI variances can be observed from the Wrst (12-16%) to the second (19-26%) measurement, which also suggests the necessity for a discussion of the reliability of this method (Good et al 2005). However, with higher portions of explained variance the exposure-related variances did not change markedly.…”

“…Each eligible eye was tested and the child was asked to place the 15 colored caps in order. The Lanthony desaturated test was always performed twice to check for repeatability [17]. The color vision tests were performed under daylight conditions obtained by a D65 (illuminant D) light source at 270 lux.…”

“…Although some previous reports have proven that this quantitative scoring system using the D-15DS was useful for screening 8 and correlated with the score of the 100-hue test, 12,13 the reference intervals were investigated with only a small sample size 3,14,15 and adequate discrimination values are still unclear. In general, the 90th or 95th percentile value in a normal population is important for colour vision testing.…”
