The Representation of Trust in Artificial Intelligence Healthcare Research

Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) tends to emerge as a relevant component of medical care, previously reserved for medical experts. A key factor for the utilization of AI is the user’s trust in the AI itself, respectively the AIt’s decision process, but AI-models are lacking information about this process, the so-called Black Box, potentially affecting usert’s trust in AI. This analysis’ objective is the description of trust-related research regarding AI-models and the relevance of trust in comparison to other AI-r… Show more

“…Neser [3] distinguishes three forms of trust: system trust, interpersonal trust, and self-trust, which are also reported in the context of technologies. Although several factors affecting trust in digitalization and AI have been identified, the process of trust building has been insufficiently studied [4]. Therefore, the aim of this qualitative study 2 is to investigate 1) if and how (medical) experts have trust in digitalization or AI in healthcare, and 2) which factors contribute to trust building.…”

“…The emergence of large language models (LLMs) such as GPT-4 (OpenAI) has led to their integration into search engines such as Bing (Microsoft) in order to enhance the search experience 2 . However, a major concern surrounding these LLMs is their inherent "black box" nature, as it is often unclear where these models obtain their information from 3 . Indeed, LLMs are known to "hallucinate," or generate responses that are unfaithful to the underlying training material 4 .…”
