The Risk of Chronic Kidney Disease Associated with Urolithiasis and its Urological Treatments: A Review

Abstract: Although the effect size is modest, urolithiasis may cause chronic kidney disease and, thus, it is mandatory to assess patients with renal stones for the risk of chronic kidney disease/end stage renal disease. We suggest that all guidelines dealing with renal stone disease should include assessment of this risk.

“…In general, SCFA-producing taxa are responsible for modulation of inflammation and protection against oxidative stress 39. The depletion of Faecalibacterium could thus be involved in the nephrolithiasis-associated chronic kidney injury, which has been recently demonstrated in epidemiological and clinical studies 40. Furthermore, depletion of SCFA-producing taxa has been recently demonstrated in the gut microbiota of patients with chronic kidney disease 41.…”

“…Other risk factors associated with CKD identified in KSF include: existing kidney functional impairment, recurrent urinary tract infections with kidney stones of particular compositions including struvite, UA stones, symptomatic stones, solitary kidney, neurogenic bladder, renal or urinary tract malformations and ileal diversion, malabsorptive bowel conditions and some monogenic diseases responsible for nephrolithiasis and/or nephrocalcinosis, especially in children (Table 1) [73].…”

“…Risk factors for chronic kidney disease (CKD) include race, gender, age, and family history. Moreover, smoking, obesity, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, systemic inflammatory state/inflammation, and urolithiasis can also lead to CKD [ 3 , 4 , 5 ]. The development of CKD is associated with significant changes in the acid excretion through the kidneys.…”
