The role of climate on the geographic variability of asthma, allergic rhinitis and respiratory symptoms: results from the Italian study of asthma in young adults

Abstract: Asthma prevalence seems to be significantly affected by climate as asthma-like symptoms were more common in central-southern Italy, with a Mediterranean climate, than in areas with a continental climate (northern Italy).

“…Our results confirm [24] that the prevalence of asthma and asthma-like symptoms in Italy is higher in the Mediterranean than in the Sub-Continental area. This difference could reflect the different exposures to outdoor and indoor allergens, or the difference in ozone concentration, which tends to reach higher levels at higher temperatures, or to the interaction between higher temperatures and pollution [20].…”

“…Prevalence of rhinitis in patients with asthma. The majority of patients with asthma experience rhinitis symptoms (277,648,909,937,945,1882,(1888)(1889)(1890)(1891)(1892)(1893)(1894)(1895)(1896)(1897)(1898)(1899). However, in many instances, symptoms may predominate in one organ and be hidden or unrecognized in other organs even though they exist.…”

“…Often, it is found that rhinitis prevalence increases faster than asthma prevalence, which was also found to decrease in some countries (904,947,948,1896,(1917)(1918)(1919)(1920)(1921)(1922). It appears that in regions of highest prevalence, the proportion of subjects suffering from asthma or rhinitis may be reaching a plateau (1919).…”

“…(2) The World Health Organization (WHO) states that climate plays an important role in the transmission of various infectious diseases that are among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in developing countries. (3) Although several effects of seasonality on public health in areas with a temperatesubtropical climate have been documented, (4)(5)(6)(7)(8) the relationships between health and climate have yet to be understood. (9) Some studies have found a connection between temperature or humidity and the increase in the proportion of respiratory diseases, however, those studies were based on secondary data, which are subject to biases, and this causes concern about their methodological validity and reliability.…”
