The Role of Genetics in the Pathophysiology of Obesity: A Systematic Review

Abstract: The obesity epidemic has been largely attributed to changes in lifestyle habits established over the past three decades. These changes are mainly attributed to excessive nutrition and decline in physical activity as well as additional factors such as reduced intestinal microbiota diversity, sleep duration, endocrine disruptors, and reduced variability of the ambient temperature. However, the obesogenic environment is not sufficient to determine the presence of obesity, it is necessary that the lifestyle become… Show more

“…Chromosomal abnormalities and genetic mutations can cause obesity. This inheritance can be monogenic (single mutated gene) or syndromic (a group of genes are involved) [ 6 ]. Syndromic obesity is a term used to describe obesity that is inherited in an autosomal or an X-linked pattern ( Table 1 ).…”

“…Syndromic obesity is a term used to describe obesity that is inherited in an autosomal or an X-linked pattern ( Table 1 ). Patients with syndromic obesity can present with dysmorphic features, mental retardation, hyperphagia, abnormal body organs, and/or other features of hypothalamic dysfunction [ 6 ]. Obesity in such individuals is usually early-onset, often with a history of consanguinity in the family [ 6 , 7 ].…”

“…High-calorie and high-fat food is accessible because of its low cost and immediate availability (Wright & Aronne, 2012). Genetic factors also impact obesity (Pinto et al, 2019) as well as various hormonal problems such as hypothyroidism, and external factors affecting the endocrine system (such as food or industrial drugs consumed by humans) ( Barness et al, 2007). Social factors also contribute to the risk of obesity.…”
