The role of IL-29 in immunity and cancer

Abstract: Interleukin-29 (IL-29) is a new member of the recently discovered interferon λ (IFNλ) family. It is produced predominantly by maturing dendritic cells and macrophages. It has been implicated in numerous immunological responses and has shown antiviral activity similar to the Type I interferons, although its target cell population is more limited than the Type I interferons. In recent years, the role of IL-29 in the pathogenesis of various cancers has also been extensively studied. In this review, we will discus… Show more

“…Interferons (IFN-α, IFN-β, IFN-γ, IL-28, IL-29) are cytokines with antiviral activity and their expression is induced by viral infection. IL-28 and IL-29 are members of IFN-λ family [12,13]. They are produced by dendritic…”

“…IL-29 has an antitumor effect in several cancers including lung cancer, esophageal carcinomas, and colorectal cancer. 26 In addition to its antiviral and antitumor activities, IL-29 acts as an immune modulator in rheumatoid arthritis and allergic asthma. 27,28 However, little is known about the function of IL-29 in metabolic disorders.…”

“…In most types of cancer, IL29 typically has antitumor effects, but in multiple myeloma B, IL29 produces tumor-promoting effects. Thus, more research is needed to investigate and elucidate the relationship of IL29 with cancer (25). It is interesting to see that the levels of IL29 autoantibodies in the present breast cancer study, as well as the previous ovarian cancer study (8) were elevated in the test groups compared to the reference groups (Table I).…”
