The role of leaf cutting and fire on extrafloral nectaries and nectar production in Stryphnodendron adstringens (Fabaceae, Mimosoideae) plants

Abstract: Herbivory pressure is an important ecological aspect to determine quantitative variation in plant defenses, such as the number of extrafloral nectaries (EFNs) and their nectar amount and quality. Extrafloral nectaries can attract ants, which can be considered a type of induced plant defense. Besides, plants tend to invest more in defense when they are more vulnerable to herbivores. Therefore, we aimed to elucidate if Stryphnodendron adstringens (Fabaceae), a common Cerrado tree species, when subjected to damag… Show more

“…The Society for the Study of Species Biology gives a Best Paper Award to the excellent papers published in Plant Species Biology that were judged to be of the greatest scientific importance. In 2022, the Editorial Committee of Plant Species Biology selected two papers for the Best Paper Award: “The role of leaf cutting and fire on extrafloral nectaries and nectar production in Stryphnodendron adstringens (Fabaceae, Mimosoideae) plants” contributed by Marina Neves Delgado, Helena Castanheira de Moraisand, and Davi Rodrigo Rossatto (Delgado et al, 2022) and “Secondary contact and adaptation to local pollinator assemblages mediate geographical variation in corolla length in Isodon shikokianus ” contributed by Miho Ogishima, Yusuke Hoshino, Sachiko Horie, Tadashi Yamashiro, Masayuki Maki, Kazuo Suzuki, and Ikumi Dohzono (Ogishima et al, 2022).…”
