The role of peer groups in adolescents’ educational expectations: a stochastic actor-based model

Abstract: Adolescent educational expectations predict educational attainment, which leads to labour-market success. Given peers' similarity in educational expectations, it is methodologically challenging to differentiate whether adolescents select friends who are similar in their educational aspirations or whether adolescents influence each other's educational expectations. To overcome this methodological challenge, the analysis utilizes stochastic actor-based modelling. This study uses survey data from the U.S. Nationa… Show more

“… 66 A study using data from the America Longitudinal Survey of Adolescent Health reported that adolescents’ friendships with peers with higher educational aspirations does not lead to higher educational aspirations, and that family bonds and parental participation amplify adolescents’ educational aspirations, suggesting that differing educational expectations moderate the effects of parental influences on adolescent development. 67 Meanwhile, different parenting styles affect children’s abnormal peer interactions, with parental socioeconomic status and effective parenting behaviors moderating the effect of parenting styles on transgressive peer interactions. 68 Indeed, parental expectations and perceived peer emotional support influence adolescents’ in-school competence, and peer emotional support positively influences adolescents’ academic development, where long-term parental expectations are proven to be an important factor in adolescents’ academic attainment and behavioral development.…”

“…VOS Viewer, also called VV, is software used to visualize bibliometric maps (Barra & Zotti, 2017;Hu et al, 2020;Mundt & Mundt, 2020) or data sets containing bibliographic fields such as title, author, journal, and others. In the world of research, VV is used for bibliometric analysis, mapping topics for the latest research, finding the most widely used references in certain fields, and others.…”

“…Meanwhile, longitudinal social network models can also account for individual covariates and endogenous network processes that can affect the emergence of ties within a network (e.g., Lomi et al, 2011;Steglich, Snijders and Pearson, 2010;Veenstra and Dijkstra, 2012). A few studies have recently investigated peer effects on aspirations applying this approach (Kretschmer and Roth, 2021;Lorenz et al, 2020;Mundt and Mundt, 2020). Chapter 4.2.2 introduces the longitudinal social network models utilised in the present dissertation.…”

“…The latter strain of research has gained more attention recently applying longitudinal social network analysis models (Kretschmer and Roth, 2021;Lorenz et al, 2020;Mundt and Mundt, 2020). There is some empirical evidence for social influence on attributes that are closely related to educational aspirations such as enjoyment of an academic task or effortful and disruptive behaviour in school (Shin and Ryan, 2014).…”
