“…However, the perception of discrimination in Ida-Viru county citizens was comparatively higher. This result is not in line with our hypotheses and appears peculiar given the analysis of Russia's portrayal of the Ukrainian government as disadvantaging Donetsk, Luhansk, and Crimea citizens in information operations (Pakhomenko et al, 2018). A potential intricacy can be identified with the item used to ascertain perceived discrimination, in that citizens might have had differing interpretations of the groups discriminated against in their country.…”

“…Additionally, narratives that heighten the saliency of latent grievances or mistreatment by political institutions are common in destabilization campaigns (Pakhomenko, Tryma, & J'moul, 2018). “…While university social responsibility theme is not broadly discussed in Ukrainian academic and expert circles, the attack on the city and proximity of the frontline (10 kilometres from the city) compelled local community to mobilize in order to protect citizens and the city from hybrid war attacks unleashed in the East of Ukraine by Russian Federation. This influx of cause-oriented activism was listed in the survey conducted with participation of Mariupol State University scholars (Pakhomenko, Tryma, & J'moul, 2018) conducted by Mariupol State University scholars and researchers confirms the noteworthy role of academia in counterworking Russian propaganda, as well as acceleration of efforts of civil society, university staff and students to counterattack the hybrid warfare that was especially intense in the period of 2014 -2015. Examining the case of Mariupol State University, this research paper aims to investigate whether and how under knowledge society the social role of HEIs changes in emergency situations and outline their possible contribution to problem-solving in cooperation with other partners, first of all NGOs.…”

“…Russian information operations that targeted latent grievances in the Russian communities of Ukrainian regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, and Crimea, prior to the 2014 crisis, provide a prime example of this strategy (Ambrosio, 2016;Khaldarova and Pantti, 2016). Russia is thought to have weaponised 'information, culture and money' (Pomerantsev and Weiss, 2014: 4), using popular media outlets to propagate antagonistic narratives that agitated latent political disputes and primed the historically Russian identity of these regions (O'Loughlin et al, 2017;Pakhomenko et al, 2018;Pomerantsev and Weiss, 2014). The use of compatriot organisations -funded by Russia to ostensibly maintain contact with Ukraine's large Russian diaspora -were also seen as essential methods for Russia to project antagonistic strategic narratives and stoke tensions endemic in the societies targeted (Grigas, 2016: 1).…”
