Acetone chemical ionization mass spectra of 14 monosubstituted aromatic compounds were studied. Benzene, toluene and halobenzenes give exclusively chargeexchange spectra with very little fragmentation. Protonation is characteristic of compounds with higher proton affinities than acetone, with the exception of benzonitrile. Acetylation reactions are observed mainly with benzonitrile, phenol, anisole and aniline. The acetylation of phenol and aniline mostly occurs at the substitutent.
