The stability of life satisfaction in a 15-year follow-up of adult Finns healthy at baseline

Abstract: Background: While physical health has improved considerably over recent decades in Finland, the disease burden of mental health, especially that of depression, has become increasingly demanding. However, we lack long-term data on the natural course of subjective well-being in the general population. The aim of this study was to investigate the long-term course of self-reported life satisfaction.

“…Moreover, the physical health and functional capacity of Finns has improved (31), which might have affected work ability considering that health along with work is the main determinant of work ability. However, although subjective wellbeing at the population level has been found to be fairly stable (32), the share of mental healthrelated work disability has increased (33).…”

“…The range of the summative index is 7-49. Originally (12), the cut-off points for the levels of work ability were based on the 15 th percentile, median, and 85 th percentile of the distribution of the index in the total population at baseline: (i) poor , (ii) moderate (28)(29)(30)(31)(32)(33)(34)(35)(36), (iii) good (37-43), and (iv) excellent (44-49). For the analyses here, we combined good and excellent work ability into one category.…”

“…Nevertheless, a slight fluctuation in life satisfaction scores was observed during the follow up. The mean life satisfaction score among healthy adult Finns has been found to be 8.2 [23], whereas that of our study patients at the 2-year postoperative phase reached 8.4. While life satisfaction has been shown to be highly stable in the general population [23], this was not the case with LSS patients receiving surgical treatment, but no previous longitudinal data on LSS patients exist.…”

“…The assessment of subjective well being among LSS patients should be encouraged in clinical practice. The 4-item LS scale is an easily administered and well-accepted [23] tool for this. As life dissatisfaction is strongly associated with concurrent and future depressive symptoms, our results also call for practices to detect and treat depression among postoperative LSS patients.…”

“…Life satisfaction denotes cognitive and conscious assessment by the individual of his/her quality of life as a whole which is based on personal criteria [4]. Accordingly, life satisfaction reflects the positive attitude of the individual towards the world in which he/she lives and indeed it is the same sense of joy which he/she spent a lot of time to achieve.…”
