The Study of Airborne Particulate Matter in Dalnegorsk Town

Abstract: Mines, quarries, dumps, and tailings are the sources of air pollution. In the Dalnegorsk District (Primorsky Krai, Russia), there are 20 polymetallic deposits. This study aimed to evaluate the particle size and material composition of ambient particulate matter (PM) in Dalnegorsk town and verify the influence of mining and chemical industry facilities on the composition of PM. Ambient particulates were analyzed in samples of snow cover and washout from vegetation (conifer tree needles). According to particle s… Show more

“…Heavy metals include naturally occurring chemicals with high atomic weight and density. Typically, these chemicals can be conveyed with particulate matter especially in urban areas and then reach the water and the soil (91). Several studies on humans or in vitro models suggest that HMs exposure can alter the composition and integrity of the GM (92)(93)(94)(95).…”

“…Other cigarettes smoke constituents are present in either a gas phase or particulate phase: Particulate-phase components include 4-aminobiphenyl, carbazole (tumour accelerators), indole, nicotine (ganglion stimulator and depressor), trace elements (carcinogens), catechol, cresol, phenol, polynuclear hydrocarbons, and tar [ 11 , 14 ] ( Figure 1 ) gas phase contains vinyl chloride (carcinogens), hydrazine, oxides of nitrogen, nitrosamines, formaldehyde, ammonia, acrolein, acetaldehyde, hydrocyanic acid, and carbon monoxide (impairs oxygen utilization and transport) [ 11 , 14 ] ( Figure 1 ). …”

“…Some of the inheritably received genetic flaws (such as mutations in BRCA1 or BRCA2) and infectious diseases may raise the risks of cancer. Environmental pollution, irradiation or poor lifestyle, for example, smoking can enhance DNA damage and thus can lead to cancer [ 4 , 49 , 51 , 94 , 104 ]. Damaged DNA can be repaired by cellular DNA repair machinery, and in case of severe DNA insult, if the repair mechanism fails, cells are led to death by apoptosis [ 24 , 29 , 47 , 92 ].…”
