The surface characterization of nanopowders is widely attempted by both N2 and Ar vapor adsorption methods. They are used as complementary probe molecules because of their similarities and certain differences. However, the respective reported analyses, using the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller method, suffer from inconsistencies between the determined values of the specific surface areas, A s. We examine this issue by using the zeta adsorption isotherm approach on the reported data for both vapors on two different samples from the same batch of a nanopowder material. By assuming the equivalence of the A s determined by both of the vapors, we obtain the average occupied area of an adsorbed argon atom, σA(Ar), on silica and carbon black at the solid- and liquid-state temperatures of 77 and 87 K, respectively. We then examine the determined value of σA(Ar) by obtaining A s for other samples of the same material with varying specific areas. By transforming the adsorption data from mass-specific to area-specific, the respective thermodynamic isotherms, n SV, of Ar vapor adsorbing on silica and carbon black are obtained. The determined n SV are then used with the Gibbs adsorption equation to determine the solid surface energy, γS0, and solid–vapor interface energy, γSV, for both substrates. The obtained γSV(x V) on both substrates is used to interpret the phase transition state of the Ar adsorbate at 77 K. The determined thermodynamic isotherms for Ar and N2 vapors are further used in a comparative study to show that the Ar vapor adsorption is negligibly affected by the change in silanol concentration on the silica surface in contrast with N2 vapor adsorption.

Controllable Triboelectric Series Using Gradient Positive and Negative Charge‐Confinement Layer with Different Particle Sizes of Mesoporous Carbon Materials

As a method to maximize the energy efficiency of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), high‐voltage charge injection (HVCI) on the surface is a simple and effective method for increasing surface charge densities. In this study, positive and negative triboelectric series are controlled using a 3‐layer gradient charge‐confinement wherein the particle sizes of the mesoporous carbon spheres (mCSs) are sequentially arranged depending on the external surface area of the mCSs. In the gradient charge‐confinement layers of this study, the mCS with different sizes perform charge transport from the surface to a deep position during HVCI while mitigating the charge loss through charge confinement to induce the high space charge densities. Through this process, the output voltage—which is initially 15.2 V—is measured to be 600 V after HVCI, thus representing an increase of about 40 times. Further, to amplify the low output current, which is a disadvantage of triboelectric energy, two types of electrical energy—triboelectric and electromagnetic energy—are produced in single mechanical motion. As a result, the output current produced by the cylindrical TENG and electromagnetic generator is recorded as being 1300 times higher, increasing from 12.8 µA to 17.5 mA.

The porous structure of three different, commercially available porous carbonaceous materials is investigated by the αS-plot method and by the t-plot method. Subsequently, the electrochemical properties of sulfur-free porous carbon electrodes from inspected materials are studied by cyclic voltammetry. The comparison of double-layer capacitances with the corresponding adsorption isotherms of N2 reveals the role of micropores during the capacitive charging of carbons by Li+. The studied carbons are added to the sulfur cathodes and evaluated. The cyclic voltammograms show no contribution of micropores in the carbon structure to the electrochemical processes taking place in the lithium–sulfur coin cell. The highest specific capacity of 816 mAh/g is observed for material with the lowest content of micropores in the structure (14%). The partially mesoporous and partially microporous (65%) sample and the predominantly microporous one (87%), show specific capacities of 664 mAh/g and 560 mAh/g, respectively. The galvanostatic cycling of lithium–sulfur coin cells with carbonaceous additives reveals that the mesopores and macropores in the carbon structure increase the specific charge capacity of the lithium–sulfur batteries and that the micropores improve the cycling stability of these batteries.
