The Swiss Household Panel (SHP)

Abstract: Collecting data on households and individuals since 1999, the Swiss Household Panel (SHP) is an ongoing, unique, large-scale, nationally representative, longitudinal study in Switzerland (N = 9828 households and N = 15,882 persons interviewed in 2020). “…We use data from the Swiss Household Panel (SHP), an annual panel survey based on a probability-based sample of the Swiss population living in private households. The survey started in 1999 and added refreshment samples in 2004, 2013, and 2020 (Tillmann et al, 2022). All household members as of 14 years old are invited to participate.…”

“…The vast majority of recent survey studies on compliance with public health policies rely on ad hoc (online) surveys conducted during the ongoing pandemic. Notable large-scale and multi-purpose exceptions are the Swiss Household Panel [ 47 ], UK Household Longitudinal Study [ 48 ] and the Understanding America Study [ 49 ], which can be used to analyze changes over the pandemic based on at least one pre-pandemic observation for the same individual (see [ 50 ] for a systematic review). This also applies to some surveys with more targeted topics, such as the Swedish Pregnancy Panel [ 51 ].…”

“…The current analysis is based on a representative population sample of the SHP, a unique longitudinal survey in the social sciences interviewing all household members of a random sample of private households in Switzerland since 1999 (swisspanel.ch; Tillmann et al, 2016 ). The principal aim of this annual household panel survey is to observe social change, in particular the dynamics of changing living conditions in the resident population of Switzerland ( Tillmann et al, 2021 ). The SHP survey is a general survey that covers a wide range of areas in the social sciences—for each individual participant, the SHP provides information on socio-demographic characteristics, household and family composition, health and quality of life, experience of major life events, employment status and income, social networks and integration, political orientation and values, degree of subjective well-being, and self-perception (e.g., self-esteem, personality and emotionality).…”
