The Technology Acceptance Model: Past, Present, and Future

Abstract: While the technology acceptance model (TAM), introduced in 1986, continues to be the most widely applied theoretical model in the IS field, few previous efforts examined its accomplishments and limitations. This study traces TAM's history, investigates its findings, and cautiously predicts its future trajectory. One hundred and one articles published by leading IS journals and conferences in the past eighteen years are examined and summarized. An openended survey of thirty-two leading IS researchers assisted i… Show more

“…= not significant system (e.g., usefulness) in the eCRM context. In fact, the previous TAM studies results for the link between PEoU and PU were about 70% significant (69 out of 101 studies) due to different contexts [38]. Our study adds to the previous studies and shows that in the context of eCRM (and also to a new generation of users in the age range of 20 to 35 in our sample), the link between PEoU and PU does not exist.…”

“…3 Technology acceptance model (TAM) TAM, introduced by Davis (1986) is one of the more widely used and accepted models researchers use to explain information technology (IT) and information systems (IS) acceptance and usage. Since publication, TAM has received considerable attention and empirical support (see Lee et al 2003 for a more thorough review) although some of the results have not always been consistent and/or conclusive (Ma and Liu 2004). As of January 2005, the Institute for Scientific Information's Social Science Citation Index listed more than 1,000 citations of the two studies introducing TAM (see Davis 1989;Davis et al 1989).…”
