Teaching classical culture to children can be done through literature and Phaedrus' fables. There are several books on the market that can be used to introduce Phaedrus' fables to children. However, in order to be suitable, the books should follow some requirements of appropriateness related to the use of the language and the values to be shared, among others. In this study, through the analysis of 12 Italian books on Phaedrus' fables for children, it will be analysed how the death of an animal is described through the use of verbs and structures. The research aims at making observations on how some books for children represent cruelty and the adoption of certain linguistic structures. The analysis shows, in the first place, that the authors never eliminate the death/killing of the animal; secondly, the verbs and expressions used are varied but, in most cases, cruel, and direct without making the death softer.

Reading is the basic literacy as the foundation for intellectual development. Researchers found that Indonesian students have low reading competence. This is due to the fact that they do not possess a good reading habit. Hence, the study aimed at investigating the effect of local culture-based storybooks, one of which is a fable on students' reading competence and analyzing the effect size of the treatment. It was an experimental research administering post-test only control group design. The population was sixth grade students of elementary schools in Buleleng Regency, Bali. The samples were determined using intact group cluster random sampling technique of 34 students from two elementary schools. Experimental group was treated by using storybook, whereas control group was taught by using text-based story. The data were collected through post-test. The obtained data were analyzed descriptively and inferentially using t-test. Cohen's d was administered to check the effect size. The result proves that there was a significant effect of local culture-based storybook on students' reading competence, while Cohen's d shows that the effect size was medium. Thus, teachers are recommended to regularly use stories for improving reading competence.

This study aimed to describe fable text writing-skills of students taught by the learning model contextual teaching and leraning and conventional learning models, describing the skills to write text fable students taught through learning model contextual teaching and leraning motivated high learning, and students are taught using learning model of direct instruction motivated high learning in students class VII SMPN 25 Padang. This research was quantitative with a 2x2 factorial experimental design. The study population was the seventh grade students of SMPN 25 Padang. Data were collected through questionnaires and skills tests fable writing text. Based on the research that learning model contextual teaching and leraning affect text fable writing skills. Fable text writing skills students taught with contextual teaching and learning models are highly motivated leraning better than text fable writing skills students taught by conventional learning models that are highly motivated. There is no interaction between model contextual teaching and leraning and motivation to learn in text fable affects writing skills.
