The wonderful complexity of the Mira AB system

Abstract: We have mapped the 12 CO(3-2) line emission around the Mira AB system at 0. 5 resolution using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The CO map shows amazing complexity. The circumstellar gas has been shaped by different dynamical actors during the evolution of the system, and several morphological components can be identified. The companion is marginally resolved in continuum emission and is currently at 0. 487 ± 0. 006 separation. In the main line component, centered on the stellar velocit… Show more

“…The observations of o Cet were presented by Ramstedt et al (2014). The CO v = 1, J = 3 − 2 transition at 342.647 GHz (Gendriesch et al 2009) was de-L2 T. Khouri et al tected in the observed spectral windows 0.937 GHZ wide and centred at 342.883 GHz for R Scl and 1.875 GHz wide and centred at 343.30 GHz for the other four sources.…”

“…High-resolution imaging of a few dusty AGB stars reveals bipolar or more complex, clumpy structures (e.g., Weigelt et al 1998;Monnier et al 2000;Hofmann et al 2001). Some AGB stars show spiral structures, which strongly suggests the influence of a companion (e.g., Mauron & Huggins 2006;Maercker et al 2012;Kim et al 2013;Ramstedt et al 2014;Mayer et al 2014;Decin et al 2015). These observations suggest that the seed of the morphological change already exists in the AGB phase.…”

“…The HIFI observations of W Hya were modelled in detail by Khouri et al (2014a,b) using the same code as Decin et al (2010c). Mira has a very complex circumstellar environment due to binary interaction (Ramstedt et al 2014), and the remaining sources are OH/IR stars with high mass-loss rates. These sources are therefore not included in this study.…”
