“…Particularly, in the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) behind Three Gorges Dam -the world's largest dam, algal bloom have been observed in most tributary bays since the initial water storage in 2003 (Fu et al, 2010;Stone, 2008). The dominant algal species have changed from diatom and dinoflagellates to the recent toxic cyanobacterial (Zheng et al, 2017). The high frequency and wide distribution of algal bloom in the TGR have seriously affected the aquatic ecosystem and people living in the catchment (Hao et al, 2019).…”

“…Especially after the operation of the reservoir, with changes in the hydrological state of the reservoir area, the water environment safety of the area is facing more and more pressure. Water pollution incidents occur frequently, and the frequency and harm are increasing year by year, which brings some hidden dangers to the water environment safety of the reservoir area [10][11][12][13][14]. Industrial sewage and domestic sewage, agricultural non-point source pollution, and mobile ship pollution are the three main pollution sources affecting the water quality of the Three Gorges Reservoir area, among which industrial sewage and domestic sewage account for the largest proportion.…”

“…As one of the greatest hydro-junction engineerings in the world, the Three Gorges Project (TGP) plays a crucial role in the development and governs the hydrological regime in the Yangtze River basin, and has produced remarkable economic and social benefits [1,2]. However, after the operation of the TGP since 2012, the natural regime, in terms of the hydrology and water environment characteristics in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area (TGRA), has been vastly changed, resulting in a series of water environmental problems which could have arisen due to the following reasons: (1) After its 175 m experimental impoundment, the water flow rate is reduced (the residence time is prolonged), the turbulent diffusion capacity is diminished and the self-purification capacity is reduced [1,3]. (2) Due to the high-density urban agglomeration along the TGRA, unreasonable livestock and poultry breeding and agricultural production activities result in a large amount of non-point source (NPS) pollution that has not been effectively disposed of [4].…”
