The full exploitation of information contained in mortality curves offers a tool for direct verification of theories of aging. We have analyzed the behavior of mortality curves for middle and high age groups and have proposed a mathematical model of mortality correlated with the rate of aging. The model offers an explanation for the mutual relationships between mortality curves and suggests potential methodologies for determining experimental modification of the rate of aging. The applicability of this theory is demonstrated by analysis of the changes in mortality as it is influenced by dietary antioxidants or by a calorie restricted diet. Survival data taken from a variety of studies were used as primary information, with parameters of mortality curves being determined by computer-assisted analysis of the curves. These analyses support the hypothesis that a dominant role for free radicals exists in the control of aging in Drosophila. However, in mammals-mice and rats, the effects of antioxidants as well as caloric restriction on mortality curves do not indicate that these treatments alter the rates of aging.

The adequacy of the Gompertz-Makeham law (Rt = Be^α^t + A) for a description of human mortality was tested. The analysis was based on statistical data of current mortality rates in men and women of 35 countries for 5 calender years. The study tested the justification of the part of the Gompertz-Makeham law postulating that age-associated mortality (i.e. Be^αt) increases exponentially. It was found that the α parameter of the age component of the Gompertz-Makeham law was not a constant value within the age range 35–75 years, but had rather an age-associated shift which was qualitatively different in men and women. The conclusion was made that the Gompertz-Makeham law did not adequately describe the mortality pattern of a modern human population. This should be borne in mind when use is made of mortality indices for the analysis of the human aging process.

Authors provide results of their review of research in the field of biogerontology. Despite the fact that the term "biogerontology" is not commonly used in Czech scientific practice, there have been many research efforts in this field. Up to present, the Czech research teams have focused on the theoretical and biological models of ageing, its immunological aspects, the risk factors of unsuccessfull human ageing, and also metabolic and nutritional factors. Many research teams are dealing with the mechanisms of the neurodegeneration. The authors conclude that better coordination and systematic funding of research in gerontology is needed because of the actual demographic challenges.
