Thermal decomposition of some polynitroalkanes

Abstract: The rates of thermal decomposition of tetranitromethane, bromotrinitromethane, chlorotrinitromethane, and 1,2-dichlorotetranitroethane were determined in a number of solvents. The decomposition of the methane series of compounds in CCh proceeds by a first-order reaction; their specific rate constants are best represented by k = 1016•6 exp((-38,400 ± 1400)/RT). The products of reaction from the thermal decomposition of tetranitromethane are best represented by the equation C(N02)4 = C02 + 0.25N2O + 2.25N02 + 1.… Show more

“…Kinetic parameters for TNM melt fall on the linear fit of data for trinitroethylnitroamino-based compounds. Kinetic data for TNM in solution also agree with the common line with the slight deviation for Freon, where the reaction between TNM and solvent is supposed . Thus, the obtained data for 1 – 3 kinetic parameters fully agree with the primary reaction of the C–NO 2 bond homolytic cleavage.…”

The activation energy of this process decreases from 141 kJ mol −1 for 1 to 121−122 kJ mol −1 for 2 and 3 due to the supposed lowering of the C−N bond strength.…”
