Thermal Lens Spectrometric Determination of Colloidal and Ionic Silver in Water

Abstract: Collinear dual beam thermal lens spectrometric (TLS) detection, combined with flow injection analysis (FIA), was developed and applied to determine simultaneously concentrations of ionic and colloidal silver in the Russian drinking water supplies of the International Space Station (ISS). The newly developed method is based on on-line generation of silver colloids by sodium borohydride (NaBH 4 ). The generated silver nanoparticles exhibit an absorption maximum close to 400 nm, which enables their excitation wit… Show more

“…The same instrumental setup was also employed for FIA determination of Cr(VI), based on reaction with diphenylcarbazide, 287 and with a krypton laser as the excitation beam source for FIA determination of colloidal and ionic silver in drinking water, which is supplied to the International Space Station, and colloidal silver is used as disinfection agent. 288 Determination is based on a light absorption with a maximum close to 400 nm, but as it was shown in a later work, this determination can be affected by the presence of other ions, and should by further optimized. 289 Another example of photothermal detection used in an FIA system was reported with the application of the commercial interferometric photothermal equipment.…”

“…High-sensitivity measurements for spectroscopic characterization and detection of low-absorption transparent liquid samples are provided by techniques based on the thermal lens (TL) effect [7][8][9]. It is generated by a modulated laser beam heating the sample; as a result temperature gradients (TG) are produced [10,11] and cause an intensity change of the laser probe beam (PB) that passes through the TL.…”
