Thermodynamic Properties of Autunite, Uranyl Hydrogen Phosphate, and Uranyl Orthophosphate from Solubility and Calorimetric Measurements

Abstract: In this study, we use solubility and drop-solution calorimetry measurements to determine the thermodynamic properties of the uranyl phosphate phases autunite, uranyl hydrogen phosphate, and uranyl orthophosphate. Conducting the solubility measurements from both supersaturated and undersaturated conditions and under different pH conditions rigorously demonstrates attainment of equilibrium and yields well-constrained solubility product values. We use the solubility data and the calorimetry data, respectively, to… Show more

“…In the calculations, we assume water activities of unity, and the equilibrium constant values that were used for Reactions 1-3 were 10 À13.17 , 10 À43.53 , and 10 À53.28 , respectively (Martell and Smith, 2001;Gorman-Lewis et al, 2009;Zhu et al, 2009). …”

“…The total dissolved P concentration for the calculation was fixed at the average P concentration from the biogenic HUP solubility experiments. The model was used to calculate the expected U concentration based on the solubility product for macroscopic HUP reported by Gorman-Lewis et al (2009).…”

“…Enthalpies of formation, together with Gibbs free energies of formation of these phases derived from solubility measurements, can be used to calculate entropies of formation as well, and this approach has been applied to a range of uranyl oxide hydrate phases (Gorman-Lewis et al, 2008a), uranyl phosphate phases (Gorman-Lewis et al, 2009), and to the uranyl silicate soddyite (Gorman-Lewis et al, 2007).…”

“…Literature data suggest the low solubility and high stability of many uranyl-phosphate minerals (Felmy et al, 2003;Gorman -Lewis et al, 2009). The solubility constant of the calcium form of autunite, log K sp , has been measured as -44.7 (Grenthe et al, 1992; …”
