Thermodynamics of uranyl minerals: Enthalpies of formation of rutherfordine, UO2CO3, andersonite, Na2CaUO2(CO3)3(H2O)5, and grimselite, K3NaUO2(CO3)3H2O

Abstract: Enthalpies of formation of rutherfordine, UO 2 CO 3 , andersonite, Na 2 CaUO 2 (CO 3 ) 3 (H 2 O) 5 , and grimselite, K 3 NaUO 2 (CO 3 ) 3 (H 2 O), have been determined using high-temperature oxide melt solution calorimetry. The enthalpy of formation of rutherfordine from the binary oxides, ΔH r-ox , is -99.1 ± 4.2 kJ/mol for the reaction UO 3 (xl, 298 K) + CO 2 (g, 298 K) = UO 2 CO 3 (xl, 298 K). The ΔH r-ox for andersonite is -710.4 ± 9.1 kJ/mol for the reaction Na 2 O (xl, 298 K) + CaO (xl, 298 K) + UO 3 (xl… Show more

“…At circumneutral pH, minerals such as metaschoepite and rutherfordine were considered in the model as they are commonly occurring oxides and carbonates of U that affect U transport. 24, 36–38 In addition to metaschoepite and rutherfordine, surface complexation reactions for > SOUO 2 OH and > SOHUO 2 CO 3 were also considered in order to understand the effect of sorption on the reactive transport of U. 39 The equilibrium constants estimated for U–V bearing minerals by modeling the batch experiments at circumneutral and acidic pH were used to estimate their reaction rate constants during column experiments.…”

“…Likewise, such bands were also observed in the Raman spectra (Frost et al 2004). The five H 2 O molecules referred by Kubatko et al (2005) correspond to the partially dehydrated andersonite, which already lost its "zeolitic" H 2 O from the channels (giving 1/3 molecule of H 2 O per unit-cell). According to our opinion the molecular water content in andersonite is faintly variable, depending on the distribution of the disordered H 2 O in the channels and varies approximately in the range 5.333 to 5.6 H 2 O.…”

“…on synthetic and natural andersonite, provided largely different H 2 O contents in the structure, ranging from 5 (Kubatko et al 2005), through 5.6 (Čejka andUrbanec 1988) and5.4-5.8 (Coda et al 1981) to 6 (Alwan and Williams 1980;Vochten et al 1994;Kubatko et al 2005). However, various methods of thermal analysis applied to well-defined synthetic and natural samples of andersonite proved that in every case the H 2 O content was lower than six, varying from 5.4 to 5.8, or given as an average of ~ 5.6 H 2 O (Urbanec and Čejka 1979; Čejka et al 1987;Čejka and Urbanec 1988).…”
