Thermoeconomic analysis and optimization of post‐combustion CO2 recovery unit utilizing absorption refrigeration system for a natural‐gas‐fired power plant

Abstract: Exergy and exergoeconomic analyses have been used to set out weaknesses of the postcombustion CO2 capture unit of Besat power plant that uses an ammonia absorption refrigeration system for CO2 liquefaction. The energy required for the absorption system is provided by the flue gas. The liquefied CO2 is used for beverage and food industries. The exergoeconomic costs of all utility streams and processes are calculated through a systematic method of assigning exergetic cost relations to the streams. The results po… Show more

“…In recent decades, increasing CO 2 emission into the atmosphere is considered as one of the main reasons for global warming with adverse environmental effects such as sea level rise, floods, droughts, and so forth. Reduction of fossil fuels consumption by energy efficiency, carbon capture, and storage, conversion of CO 2 to different products, application of renewable energies and reforestation are effective mitigation options . On the other hand, regarding the increasing population of the world, the rate of energy consumption increased and it causes further use of fossil fuels .…”

“…Several studies have developed relevant contributions to the thermo-economic analysis and optimization of absorption refrigeration systems [8], but few are related to the trigeneration system working at the different operating conditions. These studies mainly involve the application of the thermodynamic second law to conduct the evaluation and thermal analysis of the system, which is based on the exergy approach [9].…”

“…The continuous rise of carbon dioxide emissions is a major cause of global warming. Global warming is one of the biggest and probably most difficult environmental, social and economic threats that the world has faced so far in the recent century [1]. Increasing carbon dioxide emission into the atmosphere is one of the main reasons for global warming with adverse environmental effects such as sea level rise, floods, droughts, etc.…”

“…The influential approaches that are currently carried out are, namely, making energy systems more efficient to decrease and restrict the increasing consumption rate of fossil fuels, applying practical strategies for carbon capture and storage technologies, taking the benefits of CO 2 by converting it into useful products, introducing renewable energies to the energy mix, limiting deforestation and replanting, respectively. Based on the records, the foremost sources of CO 2 production, i.e., one third of global carbon dioxide production, are conventional fossil fuel power plants, oil and gas refineries [1].…”
